Trump accuses ABC journalist of fabricating post-shooting phone call story

President Donald Trump disputed ABC News correspondent Jonathan Karl's account of their conversation the morning after the White House Correspondents' Dinner shooting.

On Monday afternoon, Trump posted on Truth Social that he made no such call, arguing the shooting was "a hit on ME, not HIM" and questioning why he would check on Karl.

Trump claimed Karl actually called him, but he didn't answer, and accused the correspondent of dishonest reporting aimed at self-aggrandizement.

The president dismissed the claims as typical of "ABC Fake News."

Alleged shooter Cole Thomas Allen faces federal charges for attempted assassination and discharging a firearm during a crime of violence. A Secret Service agent was shot and wounded in the incident. U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro claims Allen fired the shot that struck the agent, though other law enforcement officials have not confirmed whose bullet wounded the officer.
