When Will Your Job Be Automated?

At Finovate Europe, we asked attendees a deceptively simple question:

What year do you think your job could be automated?

The answers revealed more than just dates. They exposed optimism, scepticism, humour — and a healthy dose of uncertainty about the pace of change.

Some responses were pragmatic. “2030,” one attendee offered. Close enough to feel realistic, but far enough away to remain abstract. Another said “2033,” adding a caveat about whether they’d already be “on the beach drinking martinis” by then. A third projected further out — 2044 — suggesting that certain technological hurdles would need to be cleared first.

And then there were those who answered with confidence: “Never. Never. Never.”

The range of answers highlights something important about the current AI moment. Automation is no longer theoretical. It’s no longer confined to manufacturing or repetitive back-office tasks. In fintech, AI now writes code, drafts compliance summaries, personalises marketing, detects fraud, and supports customer service in real time.

Yet when it comes to personal impact, the timeline becomes harder to define.

Part of that hesitation may reflect the evolving nature of work itself. Jobs are rarely automated in one sweeping moment. Instead, tasks are gradually augmented, reshaped, or reallocated. A role in 2030 may look dramatically different from its 2025 version — but still exist.

There’s also a human dimension. Many fintech roles rely on judgment, context, creativity, and trust. While AI continues to advance rapidly, full replacement feels different from assistance. For some, automation means efficiency. For others, it signals obsolescence. For a few, it simply won’t happen.

The humour in the responses — references to retirement or digital projections on stage — masks a serious industry conversation. As AI capabilities accelerate, professionals are increasingly aware that the future of work is not static.

So when will your job be automated?

The answers at Finovate suggest we’re still negotiating that timeline — somewhere between 2030 and “never.”

Donald Trump sued The New York Times, four of its journalists, and book publisher Penguin Random House for $15 billion in damages in a defamation lawsuit. The lawsuit, filed Monday in a federal court in Florida, alleges their stories intentionally damaged his reputation and one of his major businesses, the $TRUMP cryptocurrency token. In the complaint, Trump charges a sustained attempt by the Times and its reporters to take him down through what he describes as malicious and false reporting. The case identifies a book titled Lucky Loser: How Donald Trump Squandered His Father’s Fortune and Created the Illusion of Success, written by Times reporters Susanne Craig and Russ Buettner. And published by Penguin Random House. Trump’s attorneys contend that the book, as well as accompanying articles questioning his business history and connections between the $TRUMP token and Chinese crypto mogul Justin Sun.
