TLDR

  • Elon Musk told xAI employees on Tuesday that the company may build a factory on the moon to manufacture AI satellites
  • The factory would use a massive “mass driver” catapult system to launch satellites from the moon into space
  • SpaceX recently acquired xAI and shifted focus to building a self-sustaining lunar city in under 10 years
  • Musk said a moon base can be built faster than Mars due to more frequent launch windows every 10 days versus 26 months
  • Musk also claimed X now has 600 million monthly active users and could reach one billion daily users

Elon Musk revealed plans to build a factory on the moon during an xAI company meeting on Tuesday. The facility would manufacture AI satellites and use a giant catapult system to launch them into space.

The New York Times reported that Musk described creating a “mass driver” to launch satellites from the lunar surface. This system would help xAI generate more computing power than competitors operating on Earth.

SpaceX announced its acquisition of xAI earlier this month. Musk called the merger a new chapter for both companies during the employee meeting.

The focus has now shifted from Mars to the moon for the first phase of space expansion. Musk explained that SpaceX can launch to the moon every 10 days with a two-day trip time. Mars launches only happen every 26 months with a six-month journey.

Building a Lunar City

Musk stated that SpaceX aims to build a self-sustaining city on the moon in less than 10 years. He posted on X that the faster iteration time makes a lunar city more achievable than Mars colonization.

The moon will serve as a stepping stone to Mars and beyond. Musk described it as part of SpaceX’s mission to extend consciousness and life to the stars.

Mars colonization remains in the plans but on a longer timeline. Musk said SpaceX will begin building a Mars city in about five to seven years. However, the moon takes priority due to the faster development potential.

X Platform Growth and Future Features

During the meeting, Musk discussed X, the social media platform he purchased in 2022. He claimed the platform now has around 600 million monthly active users.

Musk noted that many users currently open X only during major global events. He expects engagement to grow as new features launch, including X Money banking service. A standalone chat app is also in development.

Musk projected that X could eventually surpass one billion daily active users. The platform continues to add features beyond its original Twitter functionality.

In 2020, Musk said he was highly confident SpaceX would land humans on Mars by 2026. He later adjusted the timeline, saying an uncrewed vehicle could reach Mars in two years from that 2020 statement.

President Donald Trump expressed interest in Mars exploration last year. He told Congress he wanted to plant an American flag on Mars and beyond.

Even though a cut took place as predicted, most leading cryptoassets began falling after a momentary price boost. Additionally, Powell directly addressed President Trump’s attempts to influence Fed policy, claiming that it didn’t impact today’s decisions. In previous speeches, he skirted around this elephant in the room. Sponsored Sponsored Powell’s FOMC Speech The FOMC just announced its decision to cut US interest rates, a highly-telegraphed move with substantial market implications. Jerome Powell, Chair of the Federal Reserve, gave a speech to help explain this moderate decision. In his speech, Powell discussed several negative economic factors in the US right now, including dour Jobs Reports and inflation concerns. These contribute to a degree of fiscal uncertainty which led Powell to stick with his conservative instincts, leaving tools available for future action. “At today’s meeting, the Committee decided to lower the target range…by a quarter percentage point… and to continue reducing the size of our balance sheet. Changes to government policies continue to evolve, and their impacts on the economy remain uncertain,” he claimed. Crypto’s Muted Response The Fed is in a delicate position, balancing the concerns of inflation and employment.
