Virtuals Protocol (VIRTUAL) is a decentralized platform on the Base network designed to tokenize AI agents, enabling co-ownership and monetization. The protocol's economic model is centered around the VIRTUAL token, which serves as the primary utility and routing currency for the ecosystem.

Issuance Mechanism

The VIRTUAL token operates as an ERC-20 token on Ethereum and has been bridged to the Base network. The protocol maintains a fixed maximum supply of 1.00 billion tokens.

For individual AI agents launched on the platform, the issuance follows a specific lifecycle:

• Initial Minting: When a new AI agent is created, 1.00 billion tokens specific to that agent are minted.
• Bonding Curve: These agent tokens are initially placed on a bonding curve and paired with VIRTUAL tokens.
• Graduation: Once the bonding curve reaches a milestone of 42,000 VIRTUAL tokens (equivalent to a market capitalization of approximately $610,500), the agent "graduates."
• Liquidity Creation: At graduation, a formal liquidity pool (LP) is established on Uniswap (typically Agent Token / VIRTUAL).

Allocation Mechanism

The distribution of the 1.00 billion VIRTUAL tokens is structured to support the ecosystem's long-term growth. As of late 2024, the supply was distributed across Ethereum (~54.30%) and Base (~45.70%).

The Community Incentives allocation is earmarked for future initiatives and is subject to an emission cap of no more than 10% per year for the first three years.

Usage and Incentive Mechanism

VIRTUAL serves several critical functions within the protocol:

• Routing Currency: It is the exclusive currency used to purchase AI agent tokens on the Virtuals platform.
• Agent Launch Fees: Creators must pay a flat fee of 100 VIRTUAL to initiate a new AI agent.
• Inference Payments: Users pay in VIRTUAL to interact with AI agents (e.g., asking questions or using them in games). These payments are conducted on-chain on a per-transaction basis.
• Governance: Tokenholders receive veVIRTUAL at a 1:1 ratio to their holdings. This non-tradable credit allows them to vote on protocol upgrades, approve new agents, and manage the treasury. Users with more than 100 million veVIRTUAL can author formal proposals.
• Buyback and Burn: A portion of the revenue generated from agent interactions is used to buy back the specific agent's tokens from the open market and burn them, creating deflationary pressure on the agent's supply.

Locking Mechanism and Unlocking Time

The protocol employs long-term locking mechanisms to ensure stability and creator commitment:

• Liquidity Lock: Once an AI agent graduates from the bonding curve and forms a liquidity pool on Uniswap, the LP tokens are locked for 10 years. While the agent's creator holds these tokens, they cannot be withdrawn, preventing early "rug pulls" or liquidity manipulation.
• Vesting and Emissions: The 35% ecosystem allocation is restricted to a maximum 10% annual emission rate over three years.
• Governance Delegation: While there is no mandatory escrow or lock-up period required to receive veVIRTUAL for voting, the tokens must be delegated to an address (either the holder's own or a third party) before they can be used in the governance forum.
• Migration Lock: During the initial migration from PathDAO to Virtuals Protocol in December 2023, trading was paused for 24 hours to ensure a stable airdrop process for eligible PATH holders.
