• Hashing Algorithm: Litecoin uses the Scrypt algorithm. Originally intended to allow mining with commodity hardware (CPUs and GPUs) to prevent the centralization seen with ASICs, Scrypt-capable ASICs have since been developed and are now commonly used.
• Block Rewards: Miners who successfully validate a block receive newly minted LTC. The initial reward was 50.00 LTC per block.
• Halving Events: To control inflation and mimic the scarcity of precious metals, Litecoin implements "halving." Approximately every four years (every 840,000 blocks), the block reward is reduced by 50%.
  • The most recent halving occurred on August 2, 2023, reducing the reward to 6.25 LTC.
  • The next halving is projected for July 2027 (at block 3.36 million), which will further reduce the reward to 3.125 LTC.

Allocation Mechanism

Unlike many modern blockchain projects that utilize Initial Coin Offerings (ICOs) or pre-mines, Litecoin's allocation is primarily decentralized through its mining process.

• Maximum Supply: The total supply is hard-capped at 84.00 million LTC.
• Circulating Supply: As of June 7, 2024, approximately 74.61 million LTC (roughly 88.83% of the total supply) are in circulation.
• Distribution: Tokens enter the ecosystem exclusively through block rewards granted to miners and are subsequently traded on secondary markets (exchanges).

Usage and Incentive Mechanism

The LTC token serves several core functions within its network:

• Medium of Exchange: LTC is used for peer-to-peer payments, allowing users to send and receive value globally without centralized intermediaries.
• Store of Value: Due to its fixed supply cap, it is often viewed as a digital alternative to silver (complementing Bitcoin's "digital gold" narrative).
• Network Security Incentives: Miners are incentivized to secure the network through two revenue streams:
  1. Inflationary Rewards: The newly minted LTC from block rewards.
  2. Transaction Fees: Miners receive all transaction fees paid by users within the blocks they confirm.

Locking Mechanism and Unlocking Time

Litecoin does not have a formal "locking" or "vesting" mechanism for its core protocol tokens in the way that Proof-of-Stake (PoS) or VC-funded projects do.

• No Pre-set Unlocks: Because there was no ICO or centralized team allocation with a vesting schedule, there are no "unlock dates" for team or investor tokens.
• Availability: Once a miner receives their block reward (after the standard coinbase maturity period), the tokens are liquid and can be moved or sold immediately.
• Smart Contract Limitations: While some secondary layers or wrapped versions of LTC might involve locking (such as in cross-chain bridges), the native Litecoin protocol does not natively enforce token locking or timed unlocking schedules for its total supply.
