Tokenomi NEAR (NEAR)

NEAR Protocol utilizes a sophisticated economic model designed to balance network security, scalability, and ecosystem growth. The native NEAR token serves as the primary unit of account and medium of exchange within the network, powering its Thresholded Proof of Stake (TPoS) consensus mechanism and sharding architecture.

Issuance Mechanism

The NEAR Protocol operates on an inflationary model with a deflationary offset. At the network's launch in April 2020, the initial total supply was set at 1,000,000,000 NEAR.

• Annual Inflation: The protocol has a fixed annual inflation rate of approximately 5.00% of the total supply. This new issuance is primarily used to pay network operators (validators) for securing the network.
• Deflationary Offset: To counter inflation, the network burns 100% of transaction fees (gas) and proceeds from Account Name Auctions. As network usage increases, the volume of burned tokens can potentially offset the 5.00% inflation, leading to a decrease in net inflation or even a deflationary state.
• Current Supply: As of December 18, 2024, the total token supply has grown to approximately 1,230,000,000 NEAR due to the net effect of inflation and fee burning.

Allocation Mechanism

The initial supply of 1 billion tokens was distributed across several categories to support the long-term development and decentralization of the ecosystem.

Additional funding initiatives have been launched since the TGE, including an $800 million ecosystem growth fund announced in October 2021. This fund was distributed among Proximity Labs ($350M), preexisting projects ($250M), startup grant pools ($100M), and regional funds ($100M).

Usage and Incentive Mechanism

The NEAR token is central to the protocol's functionality and provides various incentives for different participants:

• Validator Staking: To participate in consensus, nodes must stake NEAR tokens. The "seat price" is dynamically calculated based on the total amount staked by other validators. As of late 2024, the seat price was approximately 11,110 to 14,226 NEAR.
• Staking Rewards: 90% of the annual inflation is distributed to validators and their delegators as rewards. These rewards are distributed per epoch (roughly twice per day).
• Protocol Treasury: The remaining 10% of annual inflation is allocated to the protocol's treasury to support grassroots initiatives and ecosystem development.
• Smart Contract Creators: In a unique incentive model, 30% of the gas fees generated by a transaction are allocated to the creators of the smart contracts called by that transaction, while the other 70% is burned.
• Storage Staking: Smart contract deployers must stake NEAR tokens to cover the cost of data storage on the network. The current rate is set at 1 NEAR per 100kb of data. These tokens are locked and cannot be used for transactions or validator staking while the data is stored.

Locking and Unlocking Mechanisms

NEAR Protocol employs several locking mechanisms to ensure network stability and long-term alignment:

• Consensus Locking: Tokens committed for validator staking are effectively locked for at least three days.
• Vesting Schedules: Tokens from private rounds and team allocations were subject to vesting schedules that began at the token launch in April 2020. While specific current unlock dates were not provided in the latest data, these schedules were designed to release tokens over several years.
• Future Governance (veNEAR): A proposed governance framework (House of Stake) introduces vote-escrow NEAR (veNEAR). Under this proposal, users could lock NEAR for a minimum of 3 months and a maximum of 48 months.
  • Locking 1.00 NEAR for 12 months would yield 1.50 veNEAR.
  • Locking 1.00 NEAR for 48 months would yield 3.00 veNEAR.
  • veNEAR holders would receive voting power and APY rewards sourced from the protocol treasury.

Governance and Decentralization

While the NEAR Foundation initially held significant control, the protocol is transitioning toward a more decentralized model. The NEAR Community Treasury, launched in March 2023, serves as a decentralized fund for grassroots initiatives. Future plans include implementing on-chain voting for treasury allocations and protocol changes, potentially utilizing "proof of personhood" technology to ensure fair community representation.
